Fatal collision to be analysed
The RYA is undertaking a comprehensive investigation into the powerboat racing incident which took place on Saturday 8 August.
Two of the Phantom 19s racing in the OCR class (Offshore Circuit Racing) collided on the 25th lap of the race. Alex Edmonds, the co-pilot in one of the two boats, tragically died following the collision.
John Puddifoot RYA Powerboat Racing Manager said: “The RYA is keen to identify appropriate lessons that might be learned from any serious incident that takes place in powerboat racing. This was a tragic accident and the Inquiry Board we have established will examine closely the circumstances in which the accident happened and the event as a whole”.
The RYA Inquiry Board is made up of highly experienced individuals who have been involved in powerboat racing for many years. It is expected that they will have completed their investigation by the end of August. At the same time the RYA continues to support the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) in its investigation.
