Yachtsmen sailing in Cornish waters this summer can look forward to observing one of the largest and most majestic creatures to be found around the British Isles.

The first basking sharks, which can weigh up to seven tonnes and filter 25kg of plankton from 2,000 tonnes of water in one hour, have begun to arrive off the West Cornish coast. Hundreds more are expected to follow.

The Cornish Wildlife Trust is looking for volunteer shark spotters to help monitor the sharks’ numbers and movements.
