Spirit of Mystery voyage down under to set off from Newlyn this month
Round the world yachtsman Pete Goss plans to set off on or about 22 October. He plans to sail his 37ft Mounts Bay lugger, Spirit of Mystery, to Australia from Newlyn, Cornwall.
Photo: Renowned Cornish artist Glyn Macey’s painting of Spirit of Mystery, finished in acrylic on canvas. There is a limited run of 500 prints (34cm by 39cm), signed by the artist and the yacht’s skipper, Pete Goss, which will be sold to help improve the lives and education of children in Cornwall.
The voyage is a celebration of the 1854 journey of another Mount’s Bay lugger, Mystery, which took 116 days to reach Australia with her crew of seven Cornishmen. Pete plans to sail fully crewed, without electronic navigation, although he will use a satellite phone to stay in contact and update his website.
