40-year-old loses leg after being struck by a propeller blade
A Southampton man had one of his legs cut off and the other severely damaged in a horrific accident with a speedboat propeller blade on Saturday afternoon. The 40-year-old was part of a group of adults taking part in a water sports session on Southampton Water. They were returning to Hythe Marina with a jet-ski and speedboat. The man was attempting to board the speedboat from the water when the tragedy happened.
Hampshire Police were at the scene; a spokesman said: ‘The engines were running and the boat propellers were turning. It would appear the person’s legs were drawn under by the propeller.’
The injured man was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch have begun a full enquiry into the incident.
