Dorset's Polly Durrant's design will be representing the Bart's Bash World record attempt

A competition-winning logo has been chosen to
represent the attempt by the Andrew Simpson Sailing
Foundation (ASSF) to set a Guinness World Record for the largest-ever sailing race.

‘Bart’s Bash’ will see yachts, dinghies and windsurfers racing at hundreds of locations across the world simultaneously on 21 September 2014 at 11am (BST) in memory of double Olympic medallist and America’s Cup sailor Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson.

More than 65 entries were received for the Bart’s Bash logo hunt from
a broad field including professional graphic designers, adults and children as
young as five.

Voting was open to
anyone, from anywhere, and the process followed stated that the three logos receiving
the most public votes would be put before the ASSF trustees for their casting
vote.

Jez Payne, founder of The
Bart Project and an ASSF trustee said, ‘It was a tough call, the designs in the
final shortlist all had elements that we loved.

‘We chose our winner because it was simple, instantly
recognisable, had international reach and included elements from the Star and
Finn class logos, both areas that Andrew was closely linked to’.

Both of the international class sailing
associations have endorsed the new logo whole heartedly.

In memory of Andrew

The winning designer, Polly Durrant,
from Dorchester, Dorset said: ‘I am genuinely delighted and honoured to have had my
design chosen as the official logo for Bart’s Bash.

‘I was lucky enough to meet Andrew; his enthusiasm and energy
were infectious, his compassion and respect for team mates and competitors
obvious – it is wonderful to see this reflected in the work of the Andrew
Simpson Sailing Foundation and The Bart Project.

‘My decision to enter the
competition and make this small contribution was very much inspired by the
‘give it a try’ ethos of the Foundation, and encouraging anyone to get involved
is something I am very much behind.

‘By opening up this opportunity to the wider
public, the Foundation has captured the imagination of all ages and abilities -
what better way to represent Bart than that?’

The
ASSF is very grateful to all those who took the time and effort to create and
submit a design, and particularly delighted that so many school children
entered.

Andrew was very keen on
supporting and inspiring the next generation and this is a core value of the
Foundation.

The
new Bart’s Bash logo is now being put to work branding the document that will
officially launch the race.

‘Something special’ to be announced

A big announcement regarding the event is expected to be made this Saturday, 1 February.
