A sailor who was airlifted to safety after his yacht ran aground off the west coast of Scotland has been arrested on an international warrant.
The 35-year-old was rescued from the grounded cruiser near the Skerryvore lighthouse, near the Isle of Tiree, at 3.30am yesterday morning.
Two RNLI lifeboats from Islay and Barra attended the incident, amid strong winds ‘gusting at severe gale force’ and ‘really rough seas’. A commercial cable laying vessel also made its way to the area and provided some shelter from the weather.
The UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Prestwick airlifted the uninjured yachtsman to safety just after midday.
A Scotland Police spokesman said: ‘We can confirm that a 35-year-old man has been arrested and was detained in police custody in connection with an international arrest warrant.’
He was due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.
