Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is calling for 'lots of entries'
A two-day race will be taking place on the Thames this October to mark the Battle of Trafalgar.
The
Thames Trafalgar Race 2013, which is the first of its kind, is being jointly organised by Erith Yacht Club and the
Little Ship Club.
It will take place on 19 and 20
October 2013 and boats can enter to take part from 1 March 2013.
President of the Little Ship Club and legendary sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is supporting the race.
He said: ‘It’ll be a great event, we want lots of entries, the Thames should
be used more.’
The
Thames Trafalgar Race will start upstream near Tower
Bridge on Saturday 19 October and finish at Erith Yacht Club having passed
through the Thames Barrier – a neutral zone where no sailing is allowed and
engines must be used.
On
Sunday 20 October the second stage will start from Erith Yacht Club and end
near Greenwich.
The race entry fee is likely to be £20
per boat.
A special discount has been negotiated with St Katharine Docks for
boats wishing to come to London the weekend before and depart the weekend after
the race.
The rate of £100 will be available for any boat proving race entry.
The
Notice of Race will be published on 1 February 2013. If you wish to enter or to
be added to the mailing list to receive updates, email thamesracing@littleshipclub.co.uk
The
Thames Trafalgar Race is the second of two races along a similar route which the Little Ship Club is
involved in organising for 2013.
First up, the Thames Frostbite Race, held on
23 and 24 February, has been run for a number of years and brings together
Greenwich Yacht Club, Erith Yacht Club, Thurrock Yacht Club and Gravesend
Sailing Club.
The Little Ship Club has joined to help organise and promote the
race and the five clubs come under the banner of The Thames Yacht Racing Association.
The
berthing arrangement with St Katharine Docks marina applies to both races.
