49er pair surge into medal contention
Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes (pictured) propelled themselves into medal contention with two excellent races in the 49er on day four of Olympic sailing.
The Exmouth duo, who sat 12th overnight, finished fourth and second in the fifth and sixth races of their regatta to move into fifth overall – and only three points behind the third-place French boat.
Reigning Olympic champion Paul Goodison also enjoyed his best day of the Games so far in the Laser.
Goodison finished fourth and ninth to sit sixth overall after six races, although he is some distance behind the first three who have opened up a 16-point gap on the field and a 22-point gap on Goodison.
Alison Young remains in fourth place in the Laser Radial. She enjoyed a third consecutive second place in the day’s first race before a regatta-worst 11th in race two.
Ireland’s Annalise Murphy won the class’ first four races, but the event was thrown wide open by Murphy’s eighth and 19th-position finishes today. She is now just two points ahead of the consistent Evi Van Acker from Belgium.
In the RS-X windsurfing classes Nick Dempsey moved into the bronze medal position in the men’s category with fifth and first-place finishes, while Bryony Shaw remains in sixth position in the women’s event after finishing fourth and ninth.
