Six crew rescued and taken to Guernsey

A French yacht has sunk off the Channel Islands, leaving debris in the water.

The six crew, believed to be five men and a woman, were rescued from the yacht, Balkan, by two French rescue vessels and a helicopter.

The yacht was taking part in the Tour des Ports de la Manche (Tour of the Channel Ports) rally when their yacht sank north-east of Sark (pictured).

The crew were then taken to St Peter Port in Guernsey, where they arrived at 3.15pm today.

An estimated 110 French boats are due to arrive in Guernsey today as part of the annual flotilla.

The rally’s arrival coincided with routine maintenance on Guernsey’s lifeboat, which meant it was out of commission when the rescue occurred.
