Cargo ship keeps looking as rescue services stand down

A 22-year-old engineer who was reported missing from a cargo ship in the Irish Sea yesterday is feared drowned.

The Slovenian national was last seen late Monday night, when his ship, the Antiguan-registered Fehn Sirius, was heading south some miles off Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland.

RNLI lifeboats from Portaferry, Arklow and Newcastle, and RAF and Irish Coast Guard helicopters searched all day yesterday.

With no sign of the missing man 24 hours after the alert was raised, search and rescue efforts have now been scaled back.

His ship has halted its journey from Belfast to Portugal and continues to track back along its path, assisted by an Irish naval vessel, in hope of still finding him.
