Victory comes at 14th attempt

Australian boat Loki has been confirmed as the overall winner of the Sydney-Hobart race.

The Reichel/Pugh 63 has chased victory in the 13 previous stagings of the Southern Hemisphere classic, while racking up wins in many of Australia’s other offshore races.

The Stephen Ainsworth-skippered entry finished in the early hours of Thursday morning, but had to wait more than 30 hours before victory could be confirmed as one-by-one its challengers finished outside the required time.

Ainsworth said: ‘It has taken a long time to win. This is my 14th Hobart race, but we were quietly confident all night that we would win. We are elated. It is a fantastic feeling.’

A Farr 52, Living Doll, finished second on handicap, with 84-year-old Syd Fischer’s TP52, Ragamuffin, in third, while the supermaxi Investec Loyal clinched line honours.
