If you’re moored on the Thames or visiting London this Saturday (25th September), it’s well worth watching the river between the hours of 1215 and 1500 – you might come across the Great River Race.

It’s a 22-mile rowing race from Greenwich to Richmond,with around 300 boats expected, from Dragon Boats to Cornish Pilot Gigs and wherries to skiffs. It was first run in 1988, and has grown ever since to include serious racers and keen amateurs alike.

The start is staggered, with the slowest boats starting first, around 1215, and you can get a good view from any of the bridges along the 22-mile course. The organisers recommend watching the finish from the area around Richmond Bridge from 1500.
