Judging when the wind is strong enough to justify putting a reef in the main sail comes down to practice and experience. But if, say, 18 knots is your trigger point, then remember to measure the wind speed over the deck, (the apparent wind) when sailing upwind. When sailing downwind, remember you’ll have to turn into the wind to put the reef in, so reef before the true wind hits your target strength.
