When sailing upwind, it’s better to foot off through waves to keep the boat’s speed up. Pinching too close to the wind will slow you down, increase your leeway and make you hobby horse into the waves, whereas bearing away a few degrees and cracking the sheets a touch will keep the boat tracking nicely through the waves.
