(l) A metal link which can be opened or closed. The
most common is U-shaped and is called a D-shackle, the open part of the U being
closed by a threaded pin. 

(2) A measure of length – and rather variable from
place to place. Usually fIfteen fathoms, and
relates only to chain cable.
