Percy and Simpson move into lead, but Ainslie drops to third

Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson (pictured) moved to the top of the leaderboard in the Star class, but other British sailors were not so successful on day two of the Olympic sailing.

Reigning champions Percy and Simpson finished third and second to go with an 11th and second from day one, which sees them level with the Norwegian team of Eivind Melleby and Petter Morland Pedersen at the top.

And Brazilians Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada – expected to be the British pair’s main rivals for gold – slipped down to fourth place after ninth and sixth-pce finishes.

But elsewhere in Weymouth Bay the news was not so good for Britain’s other hopefuls.

Triple gold medallist Ben Ainslie slipped to third in the Finn class, after sixth and 12th-place finishes, which leave him 11 points behind Denmark’s Jonas Hogh-Christensen.

In the first day of his regatta reigning Laser champion Paul Goodison finished 10th and 23rd, leaving him some way off the early pace of Australia’s Tom Slingsby.

In the 49er class Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes finished both of their first two races in 12th place.

And in Olympic debutant Alison Young finished seventh and 10th in the first two races in the Laser Radial fleet, which were both won by Ireland’s Annalise Murphy.
