Head to the Isle of Wight for fun at the annual Yarmouth Old Gaffers Festival
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston opens the Yarmouth Old Gaffers Festival this afternoon, signalling the start of a weekend of on-water nostalgia and off-water revels.
The event brings together gaff-rigged yachts from all over the country to participate in two races – the Festival Old Gaffers Race on Saturday, and the Royal Solent Yacht Club’s Queen’s Jubilee Race on Sunday. There will also be races for X and Y class yachts – Bermudan rigged but over 80 years old – and for Scow and Optimist dinghies. While in the harbour, the yachts will be dressed overall, making an impressive sight.
Racing can be viewed from the Common to the east, the beach to the west and from Yarmouth Pier, while onshore attractions include street entertainment, live music, a craft fair and visiting classic vehicles. For more information, visit www.yarmoutholdgaffersfestival.co.uk
