Dee Caffari arrived in Southampton to a hero’s welcome yesterday, where hundreds of well-wishers gathered despite the rain. The first woman to sail non-stop, singlehanded against prevailing winds and currents was presented with a medal by her mother, and greeted by the Princess Royal.
The 29,000-mile voyage westwards around the world took Dee 178 days in her 72ft yacht Aviva. After crossing the line off the Lizard on Thursday, Dee took a shore team onboard who helped her sail Aviva to Southampton’s Ocean Village.
Dee joins her mentor Sir Chay Blyth in the history books, and is one of only five people to have completed such a voyage. PBO spoke to the weary yachtswoman after she crossed the finish line. Click here to see the interview.
