Gipsy Moth IV confirmed for Jersey Boat Show

World-renowned yacht, Gipsy Moth IV, in which Sir Francis Chichester sailed around the globe in 1966 is making an appearance at the 2016 Barclays Jersey Boat Show.

This year’s show will take place on the first May Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday 30 April to Monday 2 May,

The 53ft vessel, which was restored by the UK Sailing Academy in 2005, is now privately owned and run by a charitable trust.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Sir Francis Chichester’s epic journey, which at the time set a series of records, including the fastest round the world voyage by a small vessel, the longest non-stop passage by a small vessel and the longest single-handed passage. In commemoration, Gipsy Moth IV will be appearing at a number of maritime events throughout Europe this year.

While she is in the island, visitors will have the opportunity to step aboard and experience what life was like for sailors half a century ago.

The vessel will also be available for private charter and there will be crewing opportunities available for anyone with an interest in sailing (previous experience not required).

On behalf of Ports of Jersey, organisers of the annual Barclays Jersey Boat Show, Myra Shacklady says: ‘We are proud to welcome Gipsy Moth IV to our island waters during its special anniversary year and delighted that her visit has been arranged to coincide with this year’s Boat Show.

‘By allowing visitors to step on board I have no doubt she will be one of our star attractions.’

The vessel’s attendance at this year’s Boat Show is as a result of a sponsorship agreement with Fairway Group.

The three-day Barclays Jersey Boat Show takes place in and around St Helier Marina and Weighbridge Place over the May Bank between Saturday 30 April and Monday 2 May.
