Gianfranco Tortolani rescued after incident in North Atlantic
OSTAR competitor Gianfranco Tortolani has been rescued after his yacht reportedly capsized and broke its mast as he neared the finish line of the race.
Gianfranco set off his EPIRB from his Adventura 30 Open Citta di Salerno off the Newfoundland Coast. Norfolk Coastguard said that the boat had capsized and the mast was broken. The race office said the boat was awash and that he requested rescue, but the nearest yacht was over 250 nm away. He is now safely aboard the container ship Maersk Missouri and his boat has been abandoned.
