British sailor may be among lost
Three crew from a Norwegian Antarctic expedition vessel, possibly including a Briton, are missing.
A distress signal, emanating from 18NM north of Scott Base in the Ross Sea, was picked up on Tuesday.
Although the New Zealand rescue services launched a rescue mission to them in response, the EPIRB signal has since stopped.
There were five people on board the 14m (48ft) steel charter vessel Berserk, including the skipper, Norwegian Jarle Andhøy.
He and another man had been dropped onto the ice shelf to begin an attempt to reach the South Pole.
They managed to call out by satellite phone and gave information on the possible location of the yacht.
HMNZS Wellington reached the position yesterday but there was no trace of the missing men.
Other vessels in the area, including a helicopter, continue the search in very rough conditions with winds reaching 75 knots.
