And more medal races to come this week
This year’s Olympic sailing medal haul could be even better than Athens 2004, if tomorrow’s medal race for the men’s Laser goes to plan for Great Britain’s Paul Goodison.
With Ben Ainslie winning the Finn class and the Yngling trio, Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson winning the ladies keelboat class on Sunday, a third gold would put British Sailing top of the sailing medals in China.
Men’s 470 team Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield came back from fourth to win silver in this morning’s action.
Current hopes for further British medals include possible medals in both men’s and women’s windsurfing, as well as men’s keelboat.
A change to the format in China is the ‘medal race’ – the final race for each class involving only the top ten boats, where points count for double. Coming last in the medal race and scoring 20 points would sink most sailor’s chances in a 10-race regatta, meaning few classes have been decided before the final race.
