British Marine has announced a 4.3% increase in the production of UK leisure boats in 2014, despite the challenging trading conditions in the Eurozone and other key foreign markets.
The figures come from new research by British Marine, in collaboration with Phil Draper & Associates, reporting that UK manufacturers built 10,120 boats in 2014.
Key to this growth is the strengthening position of the UK’s international dinghy market, with global successes achieved by Topper International, Laser Performance and in particular, RS Sailing, whose new Aero model has received international recognition, winning accolades from the Netherlands to the US.
The UK motoryacht sector has also reported growth of 10% in the production of boats above 24m (80ft). The global demand for British Marine members Princess Yachts and Sunseeker International is increasing as they continue to manufacture ever larger boats including the trideck Sunseeker 155 yacht, which was launched in early 2014.

With boat manufacturing accounting for 29.3% of the £2.93billion received by the UK marine industry in total revenue in 2014, these figures have been described as ‘encouraging signs for the industry’.
Sarah Dhanda, membership and services director for British Marine, said: ‘These figures showcase the strength of Britain’s marine industry in a climate where UK manufacturing is under pressure to compete in international markets. It is the high-quality skills and versatility of our members which keeps the UK at the forefront of production.
‘With increased support from the Government, called for in British Marine’s Manfiesto, we could see future figures soar as the full productivity potential of UK marine businesses is unleashed.’
